What Is Phonics? A Simple Guide for Parents

Phonics is a way of teaching reading by linking the sounds of spoken English to the letters that write them. Instead of memorising whole words, children learn about 44 sounds and how to blend them, so they can read words they have never seen before.

  • About 44 sounds in English
  • Blend sounds to read
  • Segment sounds to spell
  • Usually starts at age 4–5

Why English needs phonics

English has 26 letters but around 44 sounds. Some sounds use two letters (sh, ch, ee), and some letters make more than one sound (the 'c' in cat and city). Phonics teaches these patterns in a planned order so children are not left guessing.

Synthetic phonics, in four steps

  1. Learn single sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n…
  2. Blend: say each sound and push them together — s-a-t → sat
  3. Segment: hear a word and split it into sounds to spell it
  4. Learn tricky words that break the rules: the, was, said

Phonics methods you may hear about

Jolly Phonics uses actions and songs for each sound and is common in Indian and Gulf schools. Letters and Sounds and Read Write Inc. are used widely in the UK. They all teach the same core idea — sounds to letters to words — in a slightly different order and style.

How to tell if phonics is working

  • Your child sounds out a new word instead of guessing
  • Reading of simple books becomes smoother over weeks
  • Spelling attempts are logical even when wrong (e.g. 'sed' for said)
  • Your child enjoys finding sounds in signs and labels

Try this at home

Play 'I spy' with sounds, not letter names: 'I spy something beginning with /m/'. Two minutes a day trains the ear, which is the foundation of everything else.

What Is Phonics? A Simple Guide for Parents: your options compared

Parents usually weigh four options. This is how they differ in practice:

  • Live 1 on 1 online tuition (what we offer): full attention from one tutor, pace set by the child, no travel, fixed tutor every week
  • Batch coaching classes: lower cost per hour, but one pace for 10–60 students and little time for each child's doubts
  • Tutor listing websites: many profiles to choose from, but parents check each tutor's quality and reliability themselves
  • Recorded video courses: watch any time, but no one checks understanding or answers doubts live
  • In-person home tutor: face to face, but travel time, limited tutor choice nearby and harder to reschedule

Frequently asked questions

Is phonics only for young children?

It is usually taught at 4–6, but older children and adults who struggle with reading benefit from going back to it.

Should I teach letter names or letter sounds first?

Most phonics programmes teach sounds first, because sounds are what children blend to read. Names come naturally alongside.

What is the difference between phonics and spelling?

Phonics is mainly reading (letters to sounds). Spelling uses the same knowledge in reverse (sounds to letters).

What is 1 on 1 online tuition?

One teacher teaches one student, live on video. The tutor follows your child's own school syllabus and pace, explains concepts step by step and clears doubts as they come up — there are no other students in the class.

Is the demo class really free?

Yes. The first demo class is free and there is no obligation to enrol afterwards.

How do I book a free demo class?

Fill in the short demo form on our website or message us on WhatsApp at +91 9379416374 with your child's class, board and subject. We'll call you back to fix a time.

Which classes do you teach?

Grade 1 to Grade 12, plus language, coding, Spoken English and IELTS learners.

Which boards and curricula do you teach?

CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, IGCSE, NIOS and state boards across India, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, West Bengal, UP, Rajasthan and others. Tell us your child's syllabus at the demo and we match a tutor who knows it.

Which subjects can my child learn?

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Social Science, History, Geography, Civics, Economics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Computer Science, Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, French, German, Spanish, Python, Java, Web Development, Vedic Maths, Spoken English and IELTS.

How long is each class?

It depends on what your child needs. Sessions range from 30 minutes for a quick topic or doubt-clearing class up to a full online school day of about 12 hours. We agree the length and frequency with you after the demo.

Do you offer full-day online school sessions?

Yes. For families who need it, we can run a full online school day of up to about 12 hours, planned around the child's syllabus and breaks.

Which apps do you use for online classes?

Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and similar video apps — we use whichever works best for your family.

What device does my child need?

A laptop, tablet or phone with a stable internet connection and a camera. A laptop or tablet with a bigger screen is easier for long classes and for writing work.

How are fees charged?

Either per class or per month — whichever suits your family. Every payment is recorded in your parent portal.

Why don't you show fees on the website?

Fees depend on the class, the subject and how many classes your child needs, so we share the exact fee on a call after the free demo.

What happens if my child misses a class?

We first arrange a make-up class. If that isn't possible, the fee for that class is adjusted against next month's balance, and if neither works, the amount is refunded.

Can we change the tutor?

Yes. If the fit isn't right after the demo or later on, tell us and we'll suggest another tutor for the same subject and board.

How do parents track progress?

Parents get a login to the parent portal, which shows attendance for every class, the subjects and tutors assigned, and fee records. You can also talk to us on WhatsApp any time.

Can my child learn more than one subject?

Yes. Your child can take several subjects, each with a tutor who specialises in that subject for their board.

Do you help with board exam preparation?

Yes. For Classes 9 to 12, classes focus on concept clarity, the board's exam pattern, regular practice and past papers.

Will the tutor follow my child's school textbook?

Yes. Tutors follow the textbooks and syllabus your child's school uses — for example NCERT books for CBSE — and match the school's pace.

Do you teach students outside India?

Yes. Classes are online only, so we teach students in India and abroad and schedule around your local time zone.

Do you offer in-person classes or home visits?

No. All our classes are online, which is how we can teach students in any city or country with the right tutor.

Is online tuition as effective as a home tutor?

For most students, yes. Your child still gets full 1 on 1 attention, but there is no travel, classes start on time, and you can choose from tutors beyond your neighbourhood. The free demo lets you judge for yourself.
