Multiplying and dividing fractions: Class 7 practice

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and the denominators. Read the method, follow the three worked examples, then try the six questions.

What you should know first

  • Equivalent fractions
  • Reciprocals

The idea behind multiplying and dividing fractions

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and the denominators. To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (flip the second fraction). Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first.

Step-by-step method

  1. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
  2. For ÷, flip the second fraction and multiply.
  3. Cancel common factors, then multiply.
  4. Simplify and convert back to a mixed number if needed.

Worked example 1 (Basic)

Work out 5/8 × 5/8.

  1. Multiply tops and bottoms
  2. = 25/64
  3. = 25/64
  4. Answer: 25/64

Worked example 2 (Standard)

Work out 3/8 ÷ 4/2.

  1. = 3/8 × 2/4
  2. = 6/32
  3. = 3/16
  4. Answer: 3/16

Worked example 3 (Challenge)

Work out 5/9 ÷ 3/5.

  1. = 5/9 × 5/3
  2. = 25/27
  3. = 25/27
  4. Answer: 25/27

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Flipping the first fraction
  • Multiplying whole and fraction parts separately

Practice questions

  1. (Basic) Work out 4/4 × 1/2.
  2. (Basic) Work out 4/8 × 2/8.
  3. (Standard) Work out 7/3 ÷ 2/6.
  4. (Standard) Work out 3/6 ÷ 6/2.
  5. (Challenge) Work out 2/3 ÷ 7/4.
  6. (Challenge) Work out 1/7 ÷ 4/7.
