Roman numerals: Class 6 practice

Roman numerals use I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Read the method, follow the three worked examples, then try the six questions.

The idea behind roman numerals

Roman numerals use I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Symbols are added left to right, but a smaller symbol written before a larger one is subtracted (IV = 4, XC = 90). No symbol repeats more than three times.

Step-by-step method

  1. Split the number into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
  2. Write each part (e.g. 90 = XC, 4 = IV).
  3. Join the parts in order.
