Local maxima and minima: Class 12 practice
At a stationary point f′(x) = 0. Read the method, follow the three worked examples, then try the six questions.
What you should know first
- Differentiation
The idea behind local maxima and minima
At a stationary point f′(x) = 0. If f″(x) < 0 there it is a local maximum; if f″(x) > 0 a local minimum.
Step-by-step method
- Solve f′(x) = 0.
- Find f″(x) at each point.
- Classify and find the function value.
Worked example 1 (Basic)
Find the minimum value of f(x) = x² + 2x + 3.
- f′ = 2x + 2 = 0 → x = -1
- f″ = 2 > 0 → minimum
- f(-1) = 2
- Answer: 2
Worked example 2 (Standard)
Find the local maximum and minimum values of f(x) = x³ − 3x − 3.
- f′ = 3x² − 3 = 0 → x = ±1
- f″ = 6x: x = −1 max, x = 1 min
- Max -1, min -5
- Answer: Max -1 at x = −1; min -5 at x = 1
Worked example 3 (Challenge)
Find the local maximum and minimum values of f(x) = x³ − 12x − 3.
- f′ = 3x² − 12 = 0 → x = ±2
- f″ = 6x: x = −2 max, x = 2 min
- Max 13, min -19
- Answer: Max 13 at x = −2; min -19 at x = 2
Common mistakes and misconceptions
- Forgetting to substitute back into f
- Mixing up the signs of f″
