Mode of grouped data: Class 10 practice
The modal class has the highest frequency. Read the method, follow the three worked examples, then try the six questions.
What you should know first
- Reading frequency tables
The idea behind mode of grouped data
The modal class has the highest frequency. Mode = l + [(f₁ − f₀)/(2f₁ − f₀ − f₂)] × h, where l is its lower limit, f₁ its frequency, f₀ and f₂ the neighbouring frequencies and h the class width.
Step-by-step method
- Find the modal class.
- Note l, h, f₁, f₀, f₂.
- Substitute into the formula.
Worked example 1 (Basic)
Find the mode: classes 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, 40–50, 50–60 with frequencies 4, 5, 13, 9, 3.
- Modal class 30–40; f₁ = 13, f₀ = 5, f₂ = 9
- Mode = 30 + (8/12) × 10 = 36.67
- Answer: 36.67
Worked example 2 (Standard)
Find the mode: classes 20–30, 30–40, 40–50, 50–60, 60–70 with frequencies 6, 6, 8, 4, 2.
- Modal class 40–50; f₁ = 8, f₀ = 6, f₂ = 4
- Mode = 40 + (2/6) × 10 = 43.33
- Answer: 43.33
Worked example 3 (Challenge)
Find the mode: classes 0–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, 40–50 with frequencies 5, 4, 7, 5, 3.
- Modal class 20–30; f₁ = 7, f₀ = 4, f₂ = 5
- Mode = 20 + (3/5) × 10 = 26.00
- Answer: 26.00
Common mistakes and misconceptions
- Using the wrong neighbours
- Forgetting h
